Air Travel

Air Travel

Air travel has a particularly significant impact on the climate. On the one hand, aeroplanes allow long distances to be covered in a short time. On the other hand, the climate impact of air travel stems not only from the CO2 emissions resulting from the combustion of kerosene, but also from so-called non-CO2 effects (contrails, nitrogen oxides, etc.). Their climate impact is roughly twice as great as that of CO2 emissions. However, their magnitude depends on various factors (e.g. flight altitude, flight route, position of the sun, weather). The non-CO2 effects are calculated using an algorithm based on the DLR’s CO2-equivalent estimator FlightClim v1.0.
